Exhibitions - Previous Exhibitions - A flavour of east bengal

The Gascoigne gallery is bringing a treat from the east to Harrogate with their exhibition of art from Bangladesh.  This work, which has never been seen before in the Provinces, showcases five of Bangladesh’s most talented female artists.

As part of The Gascoigne gallery’s commitment to the community, both local and globally, this exhibition is being held with our sponsor “Jinnah” to support the charity Dig Deep.

The art work ranges across the mediums from watercolours to oils and covers a variety of subject matter.  Each work exudes the life and emotions from one of the world’s most beautiful places.  Steamy jungles merge with peaceful rivers, temple imagery fuses with ‘bollywood’ to produce dreams that tempt you in and make you linger in the enchantment that these five ladies from east Bengal create.

Kanak Chanpa Chakma
Kanak (pronounced Konok) is a member of the Chakmas, a colourful Buddhist ethnic minority from the Chittagong Hill Tracts.  She portrays the happy peaceful days of her past that is no longer existent due to political troubles, cataloguing indigenous people; their lifestyles, and tries to expose their lost cultures through her work.

Nusrat Jahan Nazli
Nusrat feels that the spoken language has too many limitations and is inadequate to fully express feelings and the true beauty of landscapes and moments in life, so she chooses to capture these sentiments with the help of colour and brushes.

Anindita Datta (Banti)
Inspired by the beauty of the Shundarban Forest – home to the Bengal Tiger and an intricate network of waterways, lush greenery and weeping forests, Aninditas work charms and emphasizes the deferent light that the forest produces throughout the day and plays upon the rich folklore surrounding this area.

Fahmida Khatun
“Human life is beautiful like flowers and nature, but our present life is not like that”.  Fahmida’s work represents the symbolic life that she believes we can achieve in the hope that their beauty will give pleasure to the viewer.

Salina Ferdouse
Salina’s paintings represent the six seasons of Bangladesh.  She believes that we are all a part of nature – mother earth and conveys that in the colours and styles of her paintings.

This exhibition brings together a fusion of styles and mediums in a truly exotic manner.
