John Langton:  Still Life - Still Alive

John Langton has addressed himself to the still-life form and has been conscious of his heroes since his student days, Chardin, Cézanne, Braque, Morandi, and it pleases him that his admiration of them has not diminished.

For him, the stillness and silence of a painting find reflection in the relationship a viewer sets up with it.  It is nothing like the work of art as social evidence or the outfall of celebrity.  It has everything to do with things quietly revealing themselves in a shared, apparent meaning, a private, singular delight.

Now 75, he recognises that he can look back over more years than he can look forward to and thus there is a retrospective quality to this show, although the works are new.
